Description

Hi. up for bid is a Super rare 1972 built Kawasaki Z1. This is one of only 5000 Z1's built in 1972!!! This Kawasaki has all the original date coded parts. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL!! I've been buying Z1's for quite awile and this is the rarest Z1 I have ever come across. Bike is a nice example of an early Z1. I beleive this bike is at least 95% original with exception to a few parts that I have replaced since I purchased the bike. the tires are obviously not the original tires and they have been replaced with a matched set of newer Dunlop's but will come with a good set of period correct Dunlop's. I did replace the Kerker exhaust system that was on the bike with the best reproduction OEM pipes you can buy. they are correct for the early Z1's. with no stampings and no covers over the weld at the muffler/head pipe connection. I also changed the foam grips back with OEM replacement grips as well. The fuel lines are new along with in line fuel filters. a new air filter and a new battery was also installed. From what I can tell the rest of the bike and engine all appear to be the original Kawasaki parts. The nice thing about the date coded parts is that you know they are the original parts and this bike does have all the correct dated parts that a 72 built Z1 should have.

There were a lot of unique parts that were only found on the early Z1's and this bike has them all! Ribless #1470 Mikuni VM28SC carburators which were only on the very early 72 Z1's. Small emblem gas tank. Black foam seat. Speedometer in 20mph incriments up to 160 and the 20 is offset which was only on about the first 4000 bikes. Guages with the small ND at the bottom. Dash says "flash" instead of "turn" and "Nuet instead of "nuetral". seemless fork ears. black petcock with ports out the rear. rear brake has no wear indicator or wear range on backing plate. sprocket cover does not have the shift pattern embosed in the cover. early front brake master cylinder cap and ribbed brake hose boot and I'm sure I'm forgetting some as well.

Date codes on this bike are:

Swing arm 2 11 Brake stay 2 11 (both nov. 1972). RH handlebar switch 2 10 LH handlebar switch 2 10 (both Oct. 1972). Front wheel 2J Rear wheel 2G (both 1972 date codes). Front brake rotor is stamped 7S (1972 date code). Sumitomo wire harness tag is dated 1972. Ignition. locks and key are 751 code which is earliest key code for Z1's and it still has the factory black key fob on the key!! Rare!!

I bought the bike from a local guy who purchased it in the early 1990's. At that time he was told that this was the 3rd Z1 sold here in Kansas city Mo. vin and engine #'s are only 46 numbers apart with frame vin # 03584 and engine # 03630.

This Kawasaki Z1 is used. bike runs. drives and shifts great with only 18. 55 original miles on the odometer which works as it should. Bike sounds great with the new exhaust. both brakes are in working order. all lights work(Hi. Low. Tail. Brake. and Turn). This bike is all complete. even still has the little white number pieces on the spark plug wires!! Has the correct #1470 stamped ribless carbs that are in great shape and idle very smooth with great throttle response and good working choke. I have put about 60 miles on the bike and everything seems to be working as it should. Speedo and tach are in great shape. not faded. needles seem to be accurate. Still has the the factory chain oiler on it which also seems to be working as it should. It appears to still even have the original Stanley headlight on it. All the paint is original and still looks good with some minor defects and normal wear. all bodywork has "made in Japan " on back side. original small emblem tank still looks very good with mostly normal wear. does have two very small dings one at the corner by the seat and one on top. but no major defects. Inside of tank has never been lined and only shows a small amount of surface corrosion. Seat has never been reupholstered and is the correct black foam. which is rare to find. no tears. rips or fading and it's still very soft and comfortable. Both chrome rims look nice for the age of the bike. Chrome fenders look good. the front fender does have a small spot where the chrome has flaked a little. I could have easily replaced it with a nice reproduction but I didn't because I wanted to leave the bike as original as I could and I will let the new owner do it as he/she wishes. shocks are original with just a little corrosion on the coil springs and again could have easily replaced with quality reproduction parts as well but I think keeping it as original as possiable is what makes this Z1 stand out from most all the other early Z1's out there that have been restored with "NOS" parts or reproduction parts.  This one is a true survivor!! Overall the bike shows normal wear for its age and has a great original appearance. You have to remember their were only 5000 Z1's built in 1972 and thats been over 40 years ago so finding these early Z1's is so hard to do as the original survivors are just not out there and there are so few left these days.

Since I've owned the bike I haven't done much to it. all I've really done is replace the few parts I stated earlier. I have done a few cosmetic touch ups. I've cleaned up some of the chrome parts but mainly I've just enjoyed riding the bike to a few differant vintage motorcycle shows where it was usually the talk of the show!

This is a nice example of an early Z1 with all the early hard to find parts. Bike will also come with a good set of period correct dunlop tires for you to put on if you want. just to give it an even more correct period look. The parts alone on this bike are worth a small fortune! Please look at all the pictures and don't hesitate to ask any question or ask for additional close up pictures. I have also uploaded 2 videos of a walk around of this early Z1 to YouTube so please check them out. Clear title in my name. bike sold as is and you are welcome to look over bike in person or have someone local look it over for you if you want before auction ends. I've sold several bikes on here and I take pride in my 100% positive feedback so bid with confidence but please serious bidders only. Thanks for reading entire description. Andy
